The Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open opens the ATP Tour's calendar in the very first week of January — a traditional warm-up before the Australian Open. But 2026 didn't warm up. From the opening round, it was already teeth-grinding.
The players arrive still shaking off the off-season, yet the intensity goes up much quicker than expected.
What follows is a gallery from the 2026 edition — a week that carried both familiar names returning to familiar ground, and new ones stepping into the light for the first time.
The Returning Champion
Beginning of the year, and it's already intense. Andrey Rublev, the 2024 champion of the tournament, returned to Hong Kong and fought his way to the semifinals, where he met Lorenzo Musetti on January 10.
Support arrived from the stands too for Andrey. He's the biggest crowd favorite besides the local players.
A Single-Handed Backhand in the Final
Lorenzo Musetti is another frequent visitor to Hong Kong. His single-handed backhand — one of the rare finds left on the modern tour — remains, as always, a delight to watch. He advanced into the final this year.
The tournament is, in many ways, a study of contrasts: names the crowd already knows by heart, and names the crowd is meeting for the very first time.
Coleman Wong — Standing for the Home City
Coleman Wong, the local favorite. After fighting through the No. 6 seed Gabriel Diallo — 1–6, 7–5, 7–5 — to reach the quarterfinals against Lorenzo Musetti. Standing, for now, at the very top of Hong Kong tennis, and carrying his city with him.
Who Is In for Doubles?
Doubles are more fun to watch than many people think, in particular with a starry line-up. Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov made it all the way to the doubles final, to the crowd's delight.
Hidden Gems...in Qualification Entries List
Alejandro Tabilo — the man who famously defeated Novak Djokovic twice, in 2024 and again in 2025 — fought his way through qualifying and into the main draw.
Every January, this tournament is also a beginning — a first stage for the next generation. Hong Kong's home crowd, warm and stubbornly loyal, makes sure the young ones know it.
Hong Kong young talent, 17-year-old Kai Thompson, was greeted by his own banner from the home fans.
A High Note to Open the Year
The event closes 2026's opening chapter on a high note — a week of long matches, warm crowds, and both familiar and unfamiliar names finding their form under the January lights.
